funfit: overview
During the lockdown, keeping up a consistent exercise routine has been a challenge for everyone. Many people feel that working out alone at home can never be as fun as exercising at the gym with friends. Thus, I challenged myself to design an experience that help people have a blast during home workouts.
step 1: defining
First, I tried to define the main problems that come with the challenges of home workouts and habit building. I interviewed two users who fell under my target group of college students staying in quarantine. The recurring pain points I gathered during the interview were their lack of self-discipline and the feeling of loneliness and boredom during home workouts. These pain points helped me to find a focus area: making exercise routines more fun and engaging even when the user is alone.
step 2: ideating
Keeping the focus area in mind, I brainstormed a bunch of different features that could make home workouts more than just planks and push-ups. Some of the ideas included connecting the users with their friends and recommending customized workout videos based on the unique needs and interests of the users. These features aim to encourage users to keep pushing themselves and eventually build a workout routine that doesn’t need an external push.
step 3: prototyping
Once the initial user flow was mapped out, I started making low-fi prototypes and doing user testing. Users expressed how they feel overwhelmed with the number of workout options and the “tasks” they have to do every day. So, I decided to narrow down the recommended workout videos by having a more specific customization algorithm. I also added a “reminder” that encourages users to keep up with their daily tasks.
step 4: refining ui/ux
After a few iterations, I started thinking of how to incorporate a social media-like feeling into the app. I wanted the app to look fun, modern, and inspiring while highlighting the importance of exercising and staying fit. There are emojis and vibrant colors throughout the app. Also, the round styled edges play a role in creating a playful vibe.
